Built in 1848, John Brown's Fort was originally a local fire engine and guard-house. It was renamed when the abolitionist Brown and his followers shut themselves inside during a bloody and ill-fated raid in October of 1859. A fixture of Harpers Ferry National Park, the fort can only be viewed from the outside. It lies in the heart of the park, on the north side of the river.
